The MacBook shuts down all nonessential processes but leaves your work open. If your MacBook pro keeps rebooting after macOS 10.15 update, you can use disk utility to iron out the issue.
#MAC SHUTDOWN DURING UPDATE INSTALL#
Doesn't do any good to do an install if there's disk issues, though I'm sure your issue was caused by the power being pulled. When you close the lid on your MacBook, the device automatically enters sleep mode. If you want to be anal about it, which I am, after you boot to the install disc but before you do the install, you can open disk utility from the Utilities menu on the menu bar and run a disk verify on the volume before doing the install. Basically, if they don't start up properly, just reinstall them.
Depending on any 3rd party SW you use, you may have to reinstall those. Click Force Quit at the bottom of the window. Click the program you want to force-quit.

Once it's done, you'll want to run a software update to get everything up to date. If your Mac froze after you opened a specific application, you can try force-quitting the application by doing the following: Press Command + Option + Esc to bring up the Force Quit window. If you cant shut down your Mac because it isnt responding, you can force it to turn off without shutting down. If during application usage, see if theres an update. Or hold down the power button for up to 3 seconds, until your Mac asks whether youre sure that you want to shut down your computer now. It basically removes the old OS files and re-writes the OS from the install disc without erasing the whole hard drive. If this occurs during boot, try Safe Mode by holding shift at boot to limit what opens during startup. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking Continue in Safe Mode. Once you select the language, just keep hitting continue til it starts the install. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. My rule of thumb is wait till you get the spinning gear again, give it 3 seconds, then let go. Looks like I maybe accidentally forced-shut it down during an update.
Pop in the OS X install disc, then restart with the C key held down. I shut down my Mac with the power button and when I started it back up it allowed me to log in, but after I put my password in and the loading bar appeared, my Mac screen is now blank where as before it would take me to my desktop. You could try to narrow down the issue one way or the other, or just take the easy way out and do a reinstall of the OS.
