Multi stage, multi zone, side scrolling and stationary fights with Eggman and his henchmen are better than ever! I especially love jumping over rockets, and the spider boss! I would say Sonic Mania's greatest achievement, is the boss fights. But you soon get over it, and just enjoy the competition! It is a little weird that in vs mode, that the screen is stretched to accommodate the second player in splitscreen. He's adoreable! And you can also play as knuckles in the game's 2 player VS mode! I'm so glad they brought back that mode! I love tails so much.
It's perfect if you know a younger Spawnling who wants to play, but maybe isn't quite the sonic expert yet.

Oh! Same goes for Knuckles and Tails too! In the game's story mode, player 2 can pick up the controller and zip along as Tails at any time. And that's really important because sonic is all about getting that momentum going.Īnd that's not something all Sonic games have got right in the past! This is true Sonic spinning, runs and moves, just like the old days! I praise the game's physics design, for perfectly matching Sonic's original pace. No! They're such good levels- infact I like many of them more than the originals! There's no nasty traps or walls that will break your momentum for long. It's certainly a tricky and sticky level! All of the levels are wonderfully designed - There's always three ways to go, high, medium or low, and as you jump and spin you'll flip between these paths, getting as many rings as you can and trying not to hit those nasty spikes! MY PRECIOUS RINGS! NOOO! Oh and you must stick onto the sticky gloops!! Oh yeah those Goobs make it hard to floob on the floops! You gotta watch out for the bluey goops though! Oh I love bouncing on the flubbery floops! Yeah, you really get a good rhythm going!Īnd of course, going back in time allows Sonic fans to relive old levels reimagined, such as the rolling slopes of Green Hill Zone the bouncey floobs of the Chemical Plant. Yeah! Now that we can play classic Sonic in wide screen, you can see even more of the level so you know where you're going which makes for better platforming!
There's not really any new fancy special moves or any kind of reinvention of the classic Sonic gameplay. And yet, jumping, spinning and smashing through walls is somehow more fun than it has ever been, and I think it's because they keep things simple.
It certainly does Darren, in look, feel, and design. Back in the old days, there was very little space on cartridges, so storytelling was always a simple affair. Well, Sonic Mania is a retro, remix, rejig, redesign of the original games. It's so good Bajo! The story begins with Sonic and Tails flying to investigate a weird energy signal! But Doctor Eggman gets amongst it, and Sonic and Tails are sent back in time! It's actually a little bit hard to work out what's happened from the cutscene alone, but what we think happened.
